TAMPA, Fla., April 10, 2023 – MaintenX, one of the largest national facility maintenance and repair companies in the U.S., today announced that it has sponsored and started construction of its sixth Habitat for Humanity house to provide a new home to an economically disadvantaged family. The build continues an annual charitable tradition with Habitat for Humanity that also includes companywide programs with the Salvation Army and Metropolitan Ministries, and programs that align with MaintenX’s legacy of improving people’s lives through quick, cost-efficient, and expert repair solutions.
A MaintenX team broke ground on the new house on April 1 and is now completing basic construction in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco Counties. The build is being funded by a MaintenX investment of over $100,000 and supported by the volunteering of approximately 150 MaintenX employees, including many of the company’s professional carpenters, electricians, and plumbers.
MaintenX plans to complete the house by May 17 and hold a move-in ceremony for the recipient family, the Hoveys, shortly after.
Resuming an Annual Charitable Tradition
Starting in 2019, MaintenX has provided company financial support and employee volunteer construction service to build one Habitat for Humanity house a year for a disadvantaged family needing a home. The company helped build one house in 2019, two in 2020, one in 2021, and one in 2022. In addition, MaintenX has been a regular sponsor of Habitat for Humanity’s annual Golfing Fore Habitat tournament.
“A new house provides so much more than a physical space for a family to live,” said Bill Schaphorst, vice president, New Business Development, MaintenX. “A new house is a place to make memories, to find stability, and to create space for building a community, and that’s exactly what we feel we are creating with our sixth house that we are building in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. When we first rolled out the opportunity to participate in a Habitat for Humanity house build to our employees as a way to give back to the community, they embraced it 110%, and ever since then we’ve been privileged to tap the professional expertise of their electrical, plumbing, and HVAC skills to build new, clean, safe houses that families can call home.”
Helping the Hovey Family
This year, the MaintenX team built the house for the family of Yolanda Hovey, a single mother of two daughters, one in college and one in middle school. The Hoveys have been seeking a permanent home, and, in some of their previous homes, have struggled with problems such as rat infestation and difficulty in getting electrical and plumbing repairs made by their landlord.
“I cried and prayed, and I thought about how our prayers have been answered,” said Hovey, when she found out her family had been selected for a new home through Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco Counties. “I told my kids, and they were overjoyed, with my little girl so excited that
she was finally going to get her own room. What I am most looking forward to is having a house with clean air for her. My daughter will no longer have to deal with mold that has caused her allergy problems, and now my children and I will finally be able to have a home where we can feel safe.”
Salvation Army and Metropolitan Ministries Partnerships
In addition to Habitat for Humanity, MaintenX also has partnerships with the Salvation Army and Metropolitan Ministries that aim to give back to the community through annual programs.
As a contributor to the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, the company donates toys and gifts to brighten the holidays for disadvantaged Tampa Bay children, and last December gave 700-plus items to over 130 children at the Salvation Army center in South St. Petersburg. The donation was capped by the mass delivery of the gifts by a team of MaintenX employees in a convoy of vehicles.
Similarly, another companywide giving-back program is the volunteering of employees at the holiday tent of Metropolitan Ministries. There, they help distribute food to needy families by stocking food items at distribution centers, loading them on carts for recipients, and assisting recipients with the transport of food items to their vehicles. Employees also participate in Metropolitan Ministries’ Backpacks of Hope program, which provides backpacks, uniforms, and school supplies to disadvantaged children in late summer, at the beginning of each school year.
